Every new year brings with it more options, more materials, and more styles for home design than we may know what to do with. In with the new and out with the old (until the old becomes new again). If you happen to be considering a home renovation or remodel, take a look at some of the following upward trending interior designs that have just as much form as they do function.
1. Any Color You Like
White kitchens are still fairly popular but the clean look of the all-white kitchen is actually pretty tough to keep clean. More and more homeowners are seeking out ways to personalize their kitchen space by adding splashes of color and texture. Think dark blues, deep reds, and rich browns for cabinets or cupboards. These warm inviting hues contrast beautifully with white countertops and backsplashes.
One specific 2018 design trend for the all-white kitchen is the blue kitchen island. This single addition of color truly pops and draws in focus. Not to mention the calming effect the color blue has on people. Which can really help you decompress after a long day as you begin prepping for dinner and congregating with family.
2. Walk-In Showers – Far From Out
The walk-in shower is trending up into 2018. Year after year, more people are opting to tear out their old tub/shower combos for open sleek shower spaces. This is due in part to the general “open concept” design being featured throughout homes but also to the accommodations they can be equipped with.
Form and function are brought together through features like built-in shelving that eliminates the need for unsightly shower caddies, sizable adjustable shower heads that allow people of any height to stand under, and even benches that are a must-have feature for seniors but also allow for slip-free shaving or simply a minute of relaxation under the hot cascading water.
3. Relax Before You Sleep
Of course, minimalist designs have come and gone over the years but the design of the modern master bedroom has come back in a big albeit calm and casual way. “Less is more” is holding true in 2018. Homeowners in the process of remodeling their master suite are throwing out bold and busy colors for calming neutral color palettes and light-toned hardwood floors.
Complimenting the new direction of comforting color schemes on walls and floors are peaceful minimalist décor, soft inviting fabrics, and uncomplicated functional furniture.
More and more Americans are lacking the much-needed rest required to make the most of our busy days. All the more reason to design your bedroom with rest and relaxation in mind.
4. Multi-Generational Accommodations
It is a continuing trend as more and more households become inclusive of extended family members. Many homeowners are opting to remodel their homes in order to take care of aging parents or grandparents rather than allow them to lose their independence by way of an assisted living facility.
Depending on your specific needs, these accommodations could include things such as basement living areas that incorporate a second kitchen or kitchenette or the addition of a main-floor bedroom for those who may find staircases discouraging.
Even practical solutions to everyday problems such as limited mobility can be implemented through smaller additions like pocket doors that take up less space and are easier to operate or wider doorways/hallways to create space that is wheelchair accessible.
5. The Intelligent Home
With so many gadgets and advancements in tech, it should be no surprise that implementation of smart appliances and fixtures continue to climb. While some devices on the market are superfluous additions, there are many that have utility and efficiency built right in.
In terms of efficiency, replacing light switches or your thermostat with models that are more customizable than ever imagined could not only lower your energy use but make your home look and feel just right. I’m talking about lighting that dims based on the time of day, lighting that turns off when you leave the room, and even a thermostat that turns up the heat when you say you’re feeling cold. Plus, many of these devices can be controlled via the smartphone in your pocket. So you never have to wonder whether or not you left the lights on.
Also, considering how many devices we use every day already that are charged via USB, new electrical outlets come equipped with USB ports built in, so it won’t matter the next time you misplace your A/C adapter (you know you will).
One extra inclusion: The all-in-one showerhead/speaker combo with Bluetooth connectivity. Now you can sing in the shower… and the shower will sing back. Win.
